The Defense Armada of Solmuta

The Settling

Picture
On this planet we grew quickly, having brought many thousands of people and vast amounts of resources. The first city that we built was called Solmuta, after the ancient Earth god of Sun and the goddess of Silence. This was for the large dwarf star in the sky paired with the bleak and foreign landscape that yielded little vegetation. The city sits to this day in the middle of a crater over 50 miles in diameter.

Over the next 300 years following our birth, smaller communities began popping up within 200 miles of Solmuta as the main city became too populated.  It grew as the capitol of Seed, and spanned 30 miles or so across by the 3ooth year of its existence. Warehouses and crude barracks became skyscrapers and districts of business and commerce. The economy of Seed was blossoming and stretched from Solmuta to the furthest settlement.

The ragtag military that accompanied the first humans grew to impressive status, using their resources to advance their already-advanced technology even further. They kept a healthy armory full of outdated weaponry and combat transportation, but since there was never a need for combat they spent all of their time and money investing in the amplification of human living conditions. Every inhabitant had access to a job, if they wanted, and was able to live comfortably regardless.

The Invasion

Approximately 400 years after settlement, it was made known that small pockets of nomads had been living on the opposite side of the planet, underground and out of sight. Once we knew of their existence and they knew of ours, they leapt ferociously at the chance to raid and plunder our settlement. At first they weren’t a threat to our military strength. But slowly and surely they developed ways to breach our defenses in small numbers. The reason they were able to do this was that their own technology--inspired by observing our operations in stealth and fully realized by stealing undetectable amounts of resources from our outposts outside the city--was quickly catching up to that of the Deltan communities. They felt that the planet was their own, that the Deltans invaded them first. Once they had the capacity to make a large move, they did so without hesitation. That was when we realized, much too late, that their “small pockets” of civilization numbered in the thousands, with each of these housing many thousands of people. They called themselves the “Yakma”, later discovered to mean “longing to touch the sky” in their native tongue.

At first, they caught us by surprise since actual military warfare was obsolete to our people, having been a peaceful colony for so many centuries. With overwhelming numbers, far outstripping those of the Deltan population, the Yakma launched a major offensive and demolished every settlement except for Solmuta. Several million souls threw themselves at our settlements, hungry for our resources and technology. But this turn of events didn’t last long, as we had the more effective military organization and knowledge of strategy, not to mention we were many centuries ahead in social structure. Even our technology was still far more advanced, though the Yakma people had made great strides on that front since our coming.

It didn't take long for the Deltan military to assemble itself for a full retaliation. A few years of protecting Solmuta with outdated military equipment gave them just enough time to devote all of their resources to ensuring the successful defense of Seed's capitol. It started with building a massive dome around the crater, creating a fortress out of our first settlement. Then, as the military structure and administration was polished, we drafted every able-bodied young man into what we ended up calling the DARSOL, or the Defense Armada of Solmuta. It was separated into three small branches: the Raptor, the BallistiCorps, and Dragoon Special Warfare Division.

The Resolution

The fighting went on for months. We maintained the defense of Solmuta and kept a large majority of the population intact. The Yakma did not fare well. They surrendered in the end and we brought their leaders in to negotiate peace. When the talks began, our leaders found that the Yakma had crash landed here centuries before and have been unable to leave. They lost most of their resources and people, and with a single vessel containing all of their smaller air and space craft, they lost all modes of transportation. Their mission was not complete when they became stranded and their own people never knew what happened to them. Until now, that is, since their earliest records indicate that they are originally Deltans.

Once peace had been negotiated and brotherhood had been established, we offered them three of our haulers as a gesture of kindness and hope, giving whoever among them that wanted to take to the stars once again a chance to rebuild and re-establish contact with the descendants of their first generation. Most of them left, and the ones who stayed did so among our people.
